Hyderabad, Sept. 13: The Coal Ministry has rejected claims that inadequate coal supply caused reduced power generation in Punjab.
The ministry said adequate coal was available to power plants in the state.
It attributed the lower generation to several other factors, including low use of state owned plants.
The ministry also cited reported breakdowns at independent power plants and delayed lifting of available coal.
Punjab Power Crisis Linked to Plant Use and Coal Lifting
The clarification followed media reports linking lower thermal power generation to plant outages and inadequate coal supply.
The ministry said the government had enabled coal movement to Punjab’s independent power plants.
The coal will be supplied from PSPCL’s captive mines, subject to statutory payment obligations to the Jharkhand government.
Coal India Limited has also reaffirmed its commitment to uninterrupted coal supplies for power generation in Punjab.
The ministry said better use of PSPCL’s own plants could help improve power generation.
It also called for closer monitoring of breakdowns at independent power plants.
Timely lifting of coal offered by CIL subsidiaries would further help meet Punjab’s power requirements.
The ministry said coal from the Pachhwara Central Coal Mine has been made available to independent power plants.
It added that the supply remains subject to compliance with applicable statutory payment requirements.
