Nalgonda, July 8: Infighting within the Congress in Nalgonda district turned violent on Wednesday after supporters of an MP and an MLA clashed over the appointment of party mandal presidents. Police resorted to a lathi charge to bring the situation under control.
Tension gripped Arvapally mandal in Suryapet district as supporters of Nalgonda MP Chamala Kiran Kumar Reddy and Tungaturthy MLA Mandula Samuel engaged in heated arguments over the appointment of Congress mandal presidents.
Supporters of the MP alleged that the MLA was making unilateral decisions in selecting party mandal presidents. They objected to the appointments and announced a rally to Gandhi Bhavan to submit a complaint against the MLA.
However, supporters of the MLA stopped the rally, triggering a confrontation between the two groups. According to reports, members of both sides hurled stones and carried sticks during the clash.
Police attempted to pacify the groups, but the situation worsened. Officers then resorted to a lathi charge at Bajireddygudem to disperse the protesters and restore order.
Reports said some supporters of the MP and a few police personnel sustained injuries during the violence.
The latest incident follows another protest held on Monday in Tungaturthy, where Congress workers demonstrated against the MLA, accusing him of taking unilateral decisions in party affairs.
