Hyderabad, June 5: The DMK is reportedly set to skip the INDIA alliance meeting scheduled in New Delhi on June 8, amid growing tensions with its ally Congress following recent political developments in Tamil Nadu.
According to party sources, the decision reflects increasing strain in relations between the two parties after post election developments in the state.
DMK Congress Relations Face Fresh Strain
Reports indicate that the DMK leadership is unhappy with Congress over its political stance after the recent Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Party leaders have allegedly accused Congress of undermining the alliance and acting against the DMK’s interests.
The reported differences emerged after Congress, which contested the elections as an ally of the DMK, allegedly extended support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam in the government formation process.
DMK leaders are said to have openly criticized Congress over the development. The issue has further fueled speculation about the future of cooperation between the two parties within the INDIA bloc.
Adding to the speculation, Kanimozhi reportedly wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker seeking separate seating arrangements for DMK members in Parliament.
The INDIA alliance meeting, scheduled to be held at the Constitution Club in New Delhi, is expected to bring together representatives of around 15 opposition parties to discuss a joint strategy against the BJP-led NDA government.
The meeting assumes significance following recent electoral setbacks reportedly faced by key opposition parties, including the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the All India Trinamool Congress.
Neither the DMK nor Congress has issued an official statement confirming any break in alliance ties. However, reports of the DMK’s absence from the meeting have intensified discussions about the future of opposition unity.
