Hyderabad, May 7: EC orders zero tolerance on Bengal post poll violence following reports of clashes and unrest after the West Bengal Assembly election results.
The Election Commission of India directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Central Armed Police Forces to take strict action against any incidents of violence linked to the election outcome.
The Commission reviewed the law and order situation in the state before issuing the directive. Moreover, it instructed officials to act immediately against intimidation, attacks, or political clashes in sensitive areas.
The Election Commission asked security agencies to ensure the safety of all citizens, political workers, and vulnerable groups across the state. In addition, officials were told to maintain a strong security presence in sensitive districts.
Senior officers have also been directed to stay alert and respond quickly to any reports of violence. The Commission stressed that no group or individual should take the law into their own hands.
Meanwhile, Central Armed Police Forces will continue supporting the West Bengal Police to maintain peace and stability. District administrations were also instructed to monitor the situation closely and ensure accountability at every level.
The Election Commission noted that free and fair elections do not end with counting alone. Instead, the post result environment must also remain peaceful and democratic.
The directive came after sporadic incidents of violence surfaced in some parts of West Bengal following the declaration of election results.
