Hyderabad, May 17: Bakrid 2026, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, is expected to be celebrated across India on May 27, subject to the sighting of the crescent moon.
One of the holiest festivals in Islam, Bakrid is observed with special prayers, sacrifice, charity and family gatherings by millions of Muslims worldwide.
The festival reflects the values of faith, devotion, sacrifice, compassion and helping the needy.
Significance Of Bakrid
Bakrid commemorates the devotion of Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.
According to Islamic belief, before the sacrifice could take place, God replaced his son with a ram, symbolising mercy, faith and obedience.
The festival reminds people about selflessness, gratitude and complete trust in God.
It also highlights the importance of sharing happiness and supporting the underprivileged sections of society.
The exact date of Eid al Adha depends on the sighting of the crescent moon as the Islamic calendar follows the lunar cycle.
Religious authorities and moon sighting committees are expected to announce the official date one day before the festival.
Bakrid Celebrations Across India
The day begins with special Eid prayers offered at mosques and Eidgahs early in the morning.
People wear traditional clothes, greet relatives and friends with “Eid Mubarak” and visit family members during the celebrations.
After prayers, many families perform Qurbani, the ritual sacrifice representing Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and faith.

Traditionally, the meat from the sacrifice is divided into three parts — one for the family, one for relatives and friends, and one for poor and needy people.
Bakrid is also considered a festival of charity and social harmony.
Families distribute food, clothes and donations among economically weaker sections to spread joy during the occasion.
Popular Bakrid Dishes
Food remains an important part of Eid celebrations in many households.
Popular festive dishes prepared during Bakrid include:
- Biryani
- Kebabs
- Mutton Korma
- Haleem
- Sheer Khurma
- Sewaiyan
Markets in Hyderabad, Delhi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru and Chennai usually witness heavy crowds ahead of the festival as people shop for clothes, sweets, spices and decorations.
Mosques and streets are illuminated while families gather for prayers, festive meals and celebrations.
Bakrid 2026 is expected to be celebrated on May 27, depending on moon sighting confirmation, bringing together communities in the spirit of faith, sacrifice and compassion.
