EV CNG Vehicles | New Delhi / Hyderabad, August 18 (Maxim News): The Centre has proposed extending the age limit for certain commercial EV and CNG vehicles operating under national permits.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways issued a draft notification with the proposed changes. The proposal also covers commercial vehicles powered by hydrogen.
Currently, commercial vehicles under national permits have different age limits. Some vehicles can operate for up to 12 years. Others have a limit of 15 years.
Under the proposed rules, eligible electric, hydrogen and CNG vehicles could operate for longer periods. The maximum limit could rise to 17 years for vehicles currently covered by the 12 year limit. It could rise to 20 years for vehicles currently covered by the 15 year limit.
However, the proposed relaxation will not cover every commercial vehicle. It will apply only to vehicles powered by batteries, hydrogen or natural gas.

The proposed extension aims to support cleaner commercial transport. It could also encourage operators to shift towards electric, hydrogen and CNG vehicles.
The Centre has proposed another change for vehicles operating under national permits. Currently, operators must renew permit authorisation every year.
Under the draft rules, operators could obtain authorisation for five years at once. The annual fee would remain Rs 16,500.
Therefore, operators would pay Rs 82,500 for five years under the proposed system. The change could reduce the need for repeated annual renewals.
The draft also proposes simpler documentation for vehicle owners. Authorities plan to use a vehicle database to reduce paperwork related to permits and vehicle records.
EV CNG Vehicles | temporary registration
Furthermore, the Centre has proposed changes to temporary registration rules. Chassis without a body could receive temporary registration for six months.
Authorities could extend that temporary registration by 30 days in special circumstances. The proposal seeks to provide greater flexibility during vehicle construction and registration.
The ministry has invited objections and suggestions from the public and relevant stakeholders. Interested parties can submit their comments within 30 days from the date of publication of the draft notification.
The proposals will become applicable only after the government completes the consultation process and finalises the rules. Until then, existing vehicle age and permit provisions will continue to apply.
The proposed changes could have a significant impact on commercial transport operators using cleaner fuel technologies. However, the final rules will determine the exact eligibility conditions and implementation framework. (Maxim News)
