Feroz Khan Questions Congress ‘Local Only’ Policy

Hyderabad, July 30 (Maxim News): As the Jubilee Hills by-election heats up, internal debates within the Congress party have taken center stage. With the party leadership leaning towards awarding the ticket to Mohammad Azharuddin, who previously contested from the constituency, Feroz Khan, another prominent minority leader and ticket aspirant, has strongly objected to what he calls a biased ‘local only’ policy.

Speaking to the media, Feroz Khan slammed Minister Ponnam Prabhakar’s remarks that the ticket would go only to a local candidate. He questioned the logic behind this rule by pointing to top Congress leaders.
“Were Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi born and raised in Wayanad? Then why are they contesting from there?” Khan asked, challenging the idea that electoral eligibility should be tied to locality.

Feroz Khan Pushes Back on Local-Only Criteria

Feroz Khan emphasized that winning elections depends on a candidate’s strength, public image, and campaign strategy, not just residential status.

“This is the Chief Minister’s constituency, and the by-election is a matter of prestige for the party. Are we saying that a candidate needs to own a house in Jubilee Hills to contest? This logic doesn’t hold up,” he said.

Azharuddin’s Candidacy Sparks Internal Tensions

With signs pointing towards Azharuddin being favored for the ticket, several names — including Rohin Reddy, Vijaya Reddy, and Feroz Khan — had been doing the rounds as potential Congress candidates. However, Ponnam Prabhakar’s comments on prioritizing local candidates have narrowed the field and stirred discontent.

Feroz Khan, who contested the 2023 Assembly elections from Nampally as a Congress candidate and lost by a narrow margin, continues to enjoy a strong base and social media presence, thanks to his sharp speeches and bold commentary.

Feroz Khan’s Political Track Record

Feroz Khan has contested four times from the Nampally constituency — once with Praja Rajyam, once with TDP, and twice with Congress. Despite his defeats, he has remained a consistent presence in Hyderabad’s political circles. In the recent 2023 elections, he lost to AIMIM’s Majid Hussain, who secured 39,360 votes, while Khan received 36,363 votes — a closely watched contest.
