Hyderabad: Heavy rain lashed Hyderabad after midnight as weather conditions changed sharply across the city and several parts of Telangana. The downpour continued for nearly two hours in many western and southern parts of the city, while light rain persisted into the early morning hours.
Areas that received heavy rain included Serilingampally, Gachibowli, Miyapur, Madhapur, RC Puram, Kukatpally, Manikonda, Khajaguda, Shamshabad and Rajendranagar. According to local weather updates, the intensity dropped after 2 am, but intermittent rain continued till dawn in several places.
The India Meteorological Department has already forecast heavy rain across Telangana from June 23 onward as the southwest monsoon regains momentum over the state. Widespread overnight rain was also reported from Hyderabad and its suburbs on Tuesday morning. Chandanagar and Ramachandrapuram recorded 12.7 cm each, while Lingampally received 12 cm and Gachibowli 10 cm.
Officials said thunderstorm activity may continue in parts of Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, LB Nagar, Saroornagar and Chandrayangutta. They added that moderate rain or thundershowers may continue through the day in Hyderabad and nearby areas.
Cloudburst warning issued for low lying areas
Authorities issued a strong warning for people living in Shamshabad, Rajendranagar, Kothur, Chevella, Moinabad and Shadnagar. They said intense thunderstorm activity, similar to a cloudburst, could trigger sudden flooding in low lying pockets.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been asked to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain spells. Emergency teams also urged people not to venture into waterlogged stretches or low level roads during the night and early morning hours.
Meanwhile, a red alert has been sounded for 10 districts in Telangana over the next few hours. The districts under alert are Adilabad, Kumuram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Jagtial, Peddapalli, Karimnagar, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Mulugu, Siddipet and Mahabubnagar.
The weather department has warned of heavy to very heavy rain in these districts. Officials said conditions may remain unstable for the next two days as the monsoon strengthens over Telangana. The IMD has also issued a broader heavy rain warning for the state from June 23 to 28.
Authorities have advised people to remain alert, especially in flood prone and low lying areas. They have also asked residents to follow official weather updates and avoid stepping out unless necessary.
