Himanta Biswa Sarma To Be Sworn-In As CM For Second Consecutive Term

Hyderabad: Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to be sworn in as the Chief Minister of Assam for a second consecutive term on Monday at a grand ceremony in Guwahati.

The oath taking ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:40 am at the Khanapara Veterinary College Field. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman are expected to attend the event along with several NDA chief ministers and senior leaders.

Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal and BJP national president Nitin Nabin will also participate in the ceremony.

Authorities have imposed heavy security arrangements around the Khanapara area, including barricades, traffic diversions and multi layered security deployment.

NDA returns to power in Assam

This will be the third consecutive NDA government in Assam. Himanta Biswa Sarma will become the only non Congress leader in the state to serve a second consecutive term as Chief Minister.

Along with Sarma, four ministers will also take oath. They include BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP leader Atul Bora and BPF leader Charan Boro.

Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass is likely to be the NDA candidate for the Speaker post in the Assam Assembly.

BJP secures record victory in Assam

The NDA alliance, comprising the BJP, AGP and BPF, secured a massive mandate in the Assam Assembly elections by winning 102 seats in the 126 member House.

The BJP alone won 82 seats, marking the party’s first ever single party majority in Assam. The AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.

Speaking ahead of the swearing in ceremony, Himanta Biswa Sarma said implementation of the BJP’s electoral promises and development agenda would remain the top priority of the new government.

The first Cabinet meeting of the new government is expected to take place shortly after the oath taking ceremony.
