Internet, July 23: A commercial oil tanker caught fire after being hit by a suspected missile or drone attack in the Red Sea, escalating concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the incident, while Yemen’s Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for attacks targeting two Saudi oil tankers.
Red Sea Shipping Faces Fresh Security Threat
According to UKMTO, the attack occurred about 70 nautical miles (130 km) southwest of Al Shuqaiq, Saudi Arabia.
The vessel caught fire following the strike, but crew members quickly brought the blaze under control. Officials said no casualties or marine pollution had been reported.
The latest attack came two days after the Houthis announced a maritime embargo on Saudi vessels, accusing the Saudi government of enforcing a blockade on areas under their control.
The incident near the strategic Bab el Mandeb Strait has renewed international concerns over the safety of commercial shipping in the region.
According to shipping analytics firm Kpler, deteriorating security conditions have led to a decline in vessel traffic through both the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab el Mandeb Strait. Several commercial ships operating near the Gulf of Aden have reportedly altered course or suspended their voyages following Houthi warnings.
Industry experts warned that continued attacks on major maritime routes could disrupt global trade, increase freight costs and place additional pressure on international energy markets.
