Hyderabad Metro Commuters Seek Additional Coaches Amid Expansion Delay

Hyderabad, July 3: Commuters and civil society organisations have urged the Telangana government to expedite the addition of coaches to Hyderabad Metro trains, citing severe overcrowding as delays in the proposed State takeover of the Metro continue.

At present, all 56 Hyderabad Metro trains operate with three coaches across the network. With daily ridership touching nearly 4.5 lakh passengers, commuters say the existing capacity is no longer sufficient during peak hours.

Hyderabad Metro Additional Coaches

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) had announced in November 2025 that it planned to introduce four coach and six coach train configurations on high density corridors after conducting a detailed study of passenger volumes, station footfalls and congestion patterns.

HMRL Managing Director Sarfraz Ahmed had said the additional coaches would be deployed through new train sets rather than by extending the existing three coach trains. The final configuration would depend on passenger demand across different routes.

However, the proposal is expected to move forward only after the Telangana government completes the takeover of Hyderabad Metro from L&T Metro. Officials have indicated that even after orders are placed, manufacturing and commissioning of the new coaches could take at least two years.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have intensified their demand for immediate action. Donthi Narasimha Reddy of Citizens for Better Public Transport said overcrowding has become a major concern for office employees, IT professionals, students and other daily commuters.

The Urban Development Forum, Hyderabad Citizens Forum and other organisations have also written to the Chief Secretary, requesting the government to begin the procurement process for additional coaches without delay. They said increasing train capacity would significantly improve passenger comfort and reduce congestion on busy Metro corridors.

Until the proposed takeover is completed, commuters are expected to continue facing overcrowded trains during peak travel hours.
