Ponguleti said the Cabinet resolved to approach the Supreme Court while accepting the scheme, stating that the state had no alternative as several other states had also implemented it. He recalled that the Telangana Assembly had passed a resolution in January opposing the replacement of MGNREGA.
He said a Cabinet sub committee headed by Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy submitted a report on the issue, which was discussed before the decision was taken.
The VB G RAM G Act, which came into force on July 1, provides 125 days of wage employment to rural workers while requiring states to bear 40 percent of the expenditure.
The Cabinet also approved the extension of the mid day meal programme to students up to Class 12. It decided to provide free mid day meals, snacks and milk to students as well as around 1.5 lakh teachers, lecturers and other staff members.
The Council of Ministers sanctioned the first phase of the Musi Riverfront Development Project for a 21 kilometre stretch at an estimated cost of Rs 7,345 crore. The government said the project would improve riverfront infrastructure and transportation facilities while benefiting residents living along the Musi River.
The Cabinet also directed officials to expedite the completion of Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS) super speciality hospitals at Sanathnagar, LB Nagar and Alwal, besides the state run super speciality hospital at Warangal.
It approved the recruitment of 6,278 posts for these hospitals. The Cabinet also cleared the construction of major warehouses on 50 acres in Warangal district and approved land allotments for a Kendriya Vidyalaya in Jagtial district and other state and Central government organisations.
