Hyderabad, May 15: Hyderabad has recorded the highest petrol and diesel prices among major metro cities in the country after oil marketing companies increased fuel prices on Friday.
Following the latest revision, petrol in Hyderabad now costs Rs 110.78 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 98.90 per litre, making the city the most expensive metro for fuel consumers.
The latest increase includes a hike of Rs 3.39 per litre on petrol and Rs 3.26 per litre on diesel in Hyderabad, which is reportedly the steepest fuel price hike among Indian cities.
In comparison, petrol in New Delhi now costs Rs 97.77 per litre, while diesel is priced at Rs 90.67. In Mumbai, petrol costs Rs 106.68 per litre and diesel Rs 93.14.
Similarly, petrol prices in Kolkata rose to Rs 108.74 per litre, while diesel costs Rs 95.13. In Chennai, petrol is priced at Rs 103.67 and diesel at Rs 95.25 per litre. Meanwhile, in Bengaluru, petrol costs Rs 106 and diesel Rs 94.10 per litre.
High VAT Pushes Fuel Prices In Hyderabad
Officials said one of the major reasons for higher fuel prices in Hyderabad is the Value Added Tax imposed by the Telangana government.
According to data from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Telangana levies 35.20 percent VAT on petrol and 27 percent VAT on diesel, which is among the highest tax rates in the country.
Due to varying VAT rates imposed by different State governments, fuel prices differ across India despite uniform base pricing by oil marketing companies.
The latest fuel price revision came 16 days after Assembly elections concluded in Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
Oil marketing companies reportedly increased prices after facing mounting losses due to the sharp rise in global crude oil prices amid escalating tensions linked to the US, Israel and Iran conflict in West Asia.
The fuel price hike is expected to impact transportation costs and household expenses, especially in urban centres where dependence on motor vehicles remains high.
