Hyderabad’s Lallaguda–Sitaphalmandi Rail Line Opens, Cuts Travel Time by 30 Minutes

Hyderabad: The Lallaguda–Sitaphalmandi chord rail line has been commissioned, providing a long-awaited direct rail link that is expected to decongest Hyderabad’s railway network, reduce travel time by nearly 30 minutes, and improve train operations.

The 3-km chord line connects Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi, eliminating a major bottleneck in the South Central Railway network.

New Chord Rail Line to Ease Hyderabad Railway Congestion

In the first phase, eight pairs of trains, including the AP Sampark Kranti Express and Karnataka Sampark Kranti Express, will operate through the newly commissioned route.

Earlier, trains travelling from Kazipet to Kacheguda without entering Secunderabad Junction had to take a 15-km detour via Moula Ali and Malkajgiri. The new alignment shortens the journey by around 12 km, saving approximately 30 minutes.

South Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer A. Sridhar said the new route enables trains from Kazipet to reach Kacheguda directly without passing through Secunderabad and Malkajgiri, resulting in significant savings in both time and distance.

The new corridor begins at Lallaguda, passes through Sitaphalmandi ‘B’ Cabin and Sitaphalmandi ‘A’ Cabin, and joins the existing railway line at Sitaphalmandi Railway Station. It includes a 1.8-km double-line section between Lallaguda and Sitaphalmandi ‘B’ Cabin, along with a 1-km connecting stretch to Sitaphalmandi ‘A’ Cabin.

Railway officials said the project removes the need for trains arriving from the Kazipet–Cherlapalli–Moula Ali section to take the longer circular route through Malkajgiri before proceeding towards Kacheguda and Bengaluru.

Apart from reducing travel time, the new rail link is expected to ease congestion at Secunderabad Junction, where trains frequently experienced delays while awaiting clearance.

The chord line also strengthens connectivity between the KazipetNizamabad, and Bengaluru routes by linking three of the five major rail corridors connected to Secunderabad Junction, improving operational flexibility and train punctuality.

The project includes a Rail-over-Rail (RoR) bridge at Alugadda Bavi, five minor bridges, a flyover, and an automatic signalling system. Railway officials said the new infrastructure will also support the introduction of additional MMTS services in the future.
