Hyderabad, July 16, 2025: The Osman Sagar and Himayat Sagar reservoirs, crucial sources of drinking water for Hyderabad, have reported a decline in water levels due to insufficient rainfall this monsoon season.
Though the Southwest Monsoon arrived in Telangana during June, rainfall in its aftermath has been significantly below average, leading to a noticeable drop in reservoir levels during June and July.
According to data:
- On June 16, Osmansagar stood at 1783 feet, against its Full Tank Level (FTL) of 1790 feet. By July 16, the level dipped to 1782 feet.
- Himayathsagar also recorded a fall, going from 1758 feet on June 16 to 1757 feet on July 16, against an FTL of 1763 feet.
- A similar one-foot drop was observed in the Singur water source, another major drinking water supplier to the city.
This trend has raised concerns among officials of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB). Both reservoirs play a vital role in supplying water to parts of Hyderabad, especially the Old City areas.
An HMWSSB official stated, “There has been virtually no rainfall in the upstream areas of these reservoirs for over a month and a half. Naturally, this has affected inflow, which is now minimal.”
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are working to ensure uninterrupted water supply to residents. Contingency plans are also being considered in case rainfall continues to remain deficient.
