Increase In BC Quota Will Benefit Poor Muslims: Amer Ali Khan
Hyderabad: Congress MLC Amer Ali Khan on Tuesday strongly backed the Bill introduced by Telangana Government to increase Backward Classes (BC) reservation to 42% in the State. He accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) of attempting to mislead people on the issue.
Speaking in the Telangana Legislative Council after BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar introduced the Bill, he called the move a historic step towards social justice and equitable representation.
Amer Ali Khan emphasised that the Congress government, under the leadership of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, had undertaken a comprehensive and scientific caste survey, which provided an accurate assessment of the socio-economic conditions of BC communities. Based on this data, the government concluded that an increase in reservation to 42% was essential to rectify the longstanding underrepresentation of BCs in education, employment, and government services.
“This is not just another political decision but a long-overdue correction of historical injustices. For decades, BCs have been demanding adequate representation in government jobs, education, and public sector opportunities. This government has fulfilled its commitment to uplift the backward sections based on concrete data,” he asserted.
Countering allegations that the inclusion of Muslim BCs would affect other BC communities, Amer Ali Khan reiterated that Muslim BCs had been legally recognised as Backward Classes for decades, not only in Telangana but across various states in India.
“The 4% reservation for Muslim BCs remains separate and intact. It does not interfere with the quota allotted to other BCs. This dedicated sub-quota ensures that Muslim BCs do not compete for the general BC reservation and have their own fair share,” he clarified.
He further accused the BJP of deliberately misleading people and attempting to create an artificial rift among BC communities by spreading misinformation.
Amer Ali Khan also pointed out that the BJP’s strategy had always been to provoke backward communities into rejecting their own rights by creating false narratives and communal tension. “Their agenda is clear: provoke BCs, create fear, and force them to oppose a Bill that is meant for their own benefit,” he added.
Turning his attention to the BRS, Amer Ali Khan accused the party of failing to act on BC welfare during its ten-year rule despite making multiple promises. He recalled that in 2014, the BRS conducted an Integrated Household Survey (IHS), claiming that it would form the basis for welfare schemes, yet the survey findings were never made public.
“If the BRS was truly committed to BC welfare, why did they not introduce this 42% reservation during their decade-long rule? Why did they keep making empty promises to BCs without backing them up with data?” he questioned.
Amer Ali Khan reaffirmed that the Congress Party had always been at the forefront of the struggle for BC rights and welfare. He highlighted the historical role of the party in implementing reservation policies and ensuring affirmative action measures to empower marginalized communities.
“This 42% reservation Bill is a continuation of our long-standing fight for social justice. Unlike the BRS, which only made empty promises, and the BJP, which actively works against reservation, the Congress has always taken concrete steps to empower BCs with genuine representation and opportunities,” he said.
He reminded the people of Telangana that the Congress had fulfilled its electoral promise and ensured that BCs received their rightful share in government jobs and education. “This is not a temporary relief but a permanent step towards the empowerment of BC communities,” he said.
Amer Ali Khan urged all members of the Telangana Legislative Council to support the Bill and stand against the BJP and BRS’s attempts to mislead BC communities. He stressed that the reservation policy was based on a scientific and data-driven approach and that no political force should be allowed to derail the process of social justice.
He expressed confidence that the Bill would mark a significant milestone in the Congress government’s efforts to promote social justice in Telangana. “This Bill is not just about numbers; it is about fairness, equality, and dignity for all backward communities in Telangana,” he said.
