India Australia Uranium Agreement Boosts Clean Energy Partnership

Melbourne, July 9: India and Australia have signed a key agreement to facilitate uranium exports from Australia for India’s civilian nuclear programme, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral energy cooperation and supporting India’s clean energy ambitions.

The agreement was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese after the annual bilateral summit in Australia.

Prime Minister Modi said the pact in the nuclear energy sector would enable the supply of Australian uranium to India and provide fresh momentum to the country’s clean energy goals.

In a joint statement, both nations said they had completed the administrative procedures required for uranium exports under the Nuclear Cooperation Agreement signed in 2015.

The two sides reiterated that Australian uranium supplied to India will be used exclusively for peaceful purposes and remain subject to the safeguards of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

India and Australia also agreed to deepen cooperation in energy trade, strengthen supply chains and expand the use of clean energy technologies.

The leaders expressed concern over the impact of tensions in West Asia on global energy supplies and prices. However, they reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring uninterrupted energy cooperation.

Australia was recognised as a key supplier of liquefied natural gas, while India was acknowledged as an important partner in the supply of refined petroleum products and liquid fuels.

Both countries agreed to increase investments in renewable energy, low emission fuels and regional energy cooperation. They also committed to maintaining stable supplies of coal, diesel and natural gas.

Australia further welcomed India’s Global Biofuels Alliance initiative, highlighting the growing collaboration between the two countries on sustainable and clean energy.
