Rajnath Singh attended the ceremony and described the commissioning as a defining moment for the country’s maritime sovereignty. He said the warship reflects India’s rising defence prowess and its steady progress toward becoming a self-reliant naval power. He also stated that INS Taragiri sends a message of peace and prosperity across the region.

The Defence Minister emphasized that the warship will significantly enhance India’s naval strength. He said it will protect maritime borders and deter threats. “The 7,000-tonne ship, equipped with BrahMos and other missiles, can keep track of the enemy’s actions. It will ensure coastal surveillance of India’s long maritime borders and also engage in humanitarian missions,” the Minister told the gathering.

He also highlighted the indigenous nature of the vessel. According to him, about 75 percent of INS Taragiri has been produced within the country. Therefore, it reflects India’s growing capability in ship-building and defence manufacturing. He added that defence production is now progressing as a “national mission” under the current government.

Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh underlined the strategic importance of a strong navy. He noted that India has a coastline of 11,000 kilometres and is surrounded by oceans on three sides. He explained that most of India’s trade depends on sea routes. “Our 95 per cent of trade happens through the sea route, energy security also relies on this route. Therefore, a strong navy is not an option but a basic necessity,” the Defence Minister stated.

He further said that the navy remains prepared to provide support in regions such as the Persian Gulf and the Malacca Straits. He added that maritime security must be viewed in a future-oriented framework, especially in the digital age.

Rajnath Singh also spoke about the changing role of oceans in the modern world. He said oceans now play a key role in security, sovereignty, and economic growth. He concluded that countries with strong naval power are better placed to protect their strategic interests and gain global respect.
