Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has formally proposed the name of Justice Surya Kant as his successor. He sent his proposal letter to the Union Law Ministry today. CJI Gavai is set to retire on November 23, and the recommendation follows the established process for the appointment of the next Chief Justice of India.
Justice Surya Kant, currently serving as a senior judge of the Supreme Court, was elevated to the position on May 24, 2019. As per the seniority and tenure norms, he will serve as the Chief Justice of India for about 14 months after assuming office. His tenure as a Supreme Court judge is scheduled to continue until February 9, 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Surya Kant comes from a middle-class background. He graduated from Government PG College in 1981 and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Law from Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984. His legal career began the same year at the Hisar District Court, and in 1985, he moved his practice to the Punjab and Haryana High Court. His early years in the legal field established his reputation for diligence and integrity.
He was designated as a senior advocate in March 2001 and later appointed as the Advocate General of Haryana. His judicial journey advanced when he was appointed as a Permanent Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. On October 5, 2018, Justice Surya Kant ascended to the position of Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, where he served until his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2019.
With this recommendation from CJI BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant is poised to take on the mantle of the Chief Justice of India, continuing the institutional legacy of leadership and constitutional stewardship at the nation’s top court.
