- Governor’s quota nominations stalled by pending court case
Kodandaram, Azharuddin MLC | Hyderabad, Oct 1: The uncertainty surrounding the MLC posts of Kodandaram and Mohammad Azharuddin continues, as clarity will come only after the Supreme Court delivers its verdict.
Both leaders were nominated by the Congress government under the Governor’s quota, but legal challenges have left their positions in limbo.
Kodandaram Azharuddin MLC
After the Congress assumed power, the names of Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan were recommended for the MLC posts. However, BRS leaders Dasoju Shravan and Kurra Satyanarayana approached the Supreme Court challenging the move.
Following this, the apex court cancelled the appointments of Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan. The matter has now been adjourned, with the next hearing scheduled after September 17.
Kodandaram Azharuddin MLC | Congress re-nominates Kodandaram, replaces Amer Ali Khan with Azharuddin
Ahead of the court’s final verdict, the state cabinet met on August 30 and once again nominated Kodandaram under the Governor’s quota. In place of Amer Ali Khan, the government decided to nominate former Indian cricket captain Azharuddin.
However, their elevation will only be possible after the Supreme Court delivers its ruling.
The suspense is not new. When the BRS was in power, it had recommended Dasoju Shravan and Kurra Satyanarayana for the same seats, but then Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan opposed the move. Later, the Congress came to power and nominated Kodandaram and Amer Ali Khan, which again triggered legal challenges.
Azharuddin drops out of Jubilee Hills bypoll race
Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had earlier announced that Kodandaram, who played a significant role in the Telangana statehood movement, would be made an MLC again. True to that assurance, his name was re-submitted for the Governor’s quota.
Azharuddin, who had contested unsuccessfully from Jubilee Hills in the last Assembly elections, had prepared to contest again in the upcoming bypoll following the death of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath. He had also intensified his groundwork in the constituency. But with the cabinet naming him for the Governor’s quota MLC post, he withdrew from the bypoll race.
Now, both Kodandaram and Azharuddin must wait for the Supreme Court’s verdict. Until then, political circles remain abuzz with speculation over when the long-standing suspense over the allocation of Governor’s quota MLC posts will finally end.
