Kurnool Bus Fire Accident: Case Filed Against Drivers

A case of negligence and overspeeding has been registered against two drivers involved in the tragic Kurnool bus fire that claimed 20 lives. The police action follows a complaint filed by survivor N Ramesh. The Ulindakonda Police in Kurnool district initiated the case based on his allegations.

The fatal incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a private bus headed to Bengaluru collided with a motorcycle near Kurnool. The bike, left with its fuel cap open, got stuck under the bus and was dragged for nearly 200 meters, igniting a blaze that engulfed the bus quickly. The fire resulted in the deaths of 20 passengers, including two children and the biker. Nine others sustained injuries. At the time, the bus was reportedly carrying 44 passengers, exceeding its seating capacity of 42.

Ramesh, who boarded the Multi Axle Sleeper AC Volvo bus near LB Stadium in Hyderabad on October 23 night, recounted his escape. He broke the rear window, escaping with his family but suffered a hand injury. Sadly, his family friend G Ramesh and several others were trapped inside and perished due to smoke and flames.

Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patel confirmed the registration of the case under sections 125(a) (endangering human life) and 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the BNS Act. The investigation is ongoing, with police probing the driver’s role in the accident and the possible violation of safety norms. The case underlines the severe consequences of negligent driving and overspeeding on Indian roads.
