Miami: Lionel Messi scored his first goal since the death of his father, Jorge Messi, as Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by Philadelphia Union in Major League Soccer on Wednesday.
Messi’s father and longtime representative Jorge Messi died aged 68 on August 8 in Rosario, Argentina.
Messi Scores Emotional Goal for Inter Miami
Playing at Subaru Park, Messi found the net in the 26th minute after shaking off his marker and firing a left-footed shot into the net.
The goal gave Inter Miami a 2-1 lead in the first half before Messi was embraced by his teammates.
The 39-year-old Argentine star also assisted Miami’s opening goal, underlining his influence despite the emotional circumstances surrounding the match.
Messi had paid an emotional tribute to his father last week, saying that he did not know “how to continue without him.”
The goal was Messi’s 13th of the MLS season, leaving him one behind Dallas striker Petar Musa in the race for the MLS Golden Boot.
Messi won the award last season.
Draw Ends Miami’s Losing Run
The result ended a three-game losing streak for defending MLS Cup champions Inter Miami.
However, the club had to settle for a point after Philadelphia Union fought back to secure the 2-2 draw.
Messi continues to lead Miami’s attack as the club looks to strengthen its position during the MLS season.
The Argentine forward also captained Argentina to this year’s World Cup final, where they lost to Spain.
Messi’s latest goal was significant not only for Inter Miami’s campaign but also as his first since the loss of his father, marking an emotional return to the scoresheet.
