- Opposition protests after PM remarks in Rajya Sabha
- Speaker cites wasted hours as disruptions continue
Hyderabad: Chaos in the Lok Sabha continued on Friday as repeated disruptions forced the Speaker to adjourn the House till February 9. Opposition members objected to criticism made by Prime Minister Modi in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday and raised strong protests inside the Lok Sabha.
According to the proceedings, opposition members questioned why their leader was not given an opportunity to speak in the Lok Sabha. They continued their protest by raising slogans against the government. Several members also displayed placards inside the House. Meanwhile, the Speaker attempted to persuade the protesting members to restore order and allow the House to function. However, the appeals did not succeed, as the members continued shouting slogans.
As the chaos continued, the Speaker announced that the House could not function under such conditions. Therefore, the Lok Sabha was adjourned till 11 am on Monday, February 9. The Speaker also expressed concern over the time lost due to repeated disruptions during the ongoing budget session.
The Speaker stated that 19 hours and 13 minutes had already been wasted in the Lok Sabha during this budget session. He pointed out that valuable time meant for legislative business could not be used due to continuous protests. Meanwhile, members of the opposition remained firm in their stand and continued objecting to the remarks referred to from the Rajya Sabha debate.
Later, it was announced that the first phase of the budget session of Parliament will end on February 13. The second phase of the session is scheduled to begin on March 9. Therefore, the remaining legislative agenda will be taken up in the coming days of the session.
The discussion on the budget will begin in the Lok Sabha from February 9, after the House reconvenes. However, the smooth conduct of the discussion will depend on whether the disruptions come to an end. Meanwhile, parliamentary proceedings remain stalled as both sides stick to their positions.
The repeated adjournments have once again highlighted the tense atmosphere in Parliament during the budget session. The Lok Sabha remains adjourned till February 9, as announced by the Speaker, while members prepare for the next round of debates.
