New Delhi, July 24: The Lok Sabha on Friday paid tribute to the martyrs of the Kargil War before repeated protests by Opposition members disrupted proceedings, forcing the House to be adjourned till noon.
Members observed a one minute silence to honour the soldiers who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.
Lok Sabha Pays Tribute to Kargil Martyrs
As the House assembled, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informed members that Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed annually on July 26, falls on a Sunday this year. He said the House was paying tribute to the fallen soldiers in advance.
Birla described Kargil Vijay Diwas as a symbol of the courage, dedication and supreme sacrifice of India’s armed forces. He said the nation would always remain indebted to the soldiers who protected its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
After the tribute, Opposition members raised slogans for the fifth consecutive day, disrupting normal proceedings.
The Speaker urged members to maintain order and allow the Question Hour to function, stressing that it is the most important opportunity for MPs to hold the government accountable on public issues.
He also said the House was prepared to hold structured discussions on all issues if they were raised in accordance with parliamentary rules.
Despite repeated appeals from the Chair, the protests continued, prompting the Speaker to adjourn the Lok Sabha till noon.
