No Indus Water To Pakistan Until It Ends Terrorism: S. Jaishankar In Rajya Sabha
Delhi/Hyderabad, July 30 (Maxim News): India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar made a bold and assertive statement in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, declaring that India will not resume the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan until the neighboring country completely abandons terrorism. The move comes in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, for which the Resistance Front (TRF) claimed responsibility.
“The Modi government has corrected a historical blunder,” Jaishankar said, referring to the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty signed by former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “As the Prime Minister has clearly said, water and blood cannot flow together. The treaty stands suspended as part of our broader sanctions policy against Pakistan.”
Indus Waters Treaty Suspension: A Strategic Shift
The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank and seen as a symbol of cooperation amid hostility between the two countries, allowed for shared use of river water originating in India and flowing into Pakistan. However, in light of persistent cross-border terrorism, the Indian government has halted water flow concessions to Pakistan, marking a decisive policy shift.
“This is not about revenge, but about national security and long-term deterrence,” said Jaishankar. “We are correcting past mistakes driven by appeasement, not peace.”
Global Action Against Terrorism
Jaishankar further highlighted the Modi government’s success in exerting pressure on Pakistan globally. Through coordinated efforts with bodies like the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and United Nations, India played a critical role in imposing sanctions on terrorist groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba and its proxies such as The Resistance Front (TRF)—despite not being a member of the UN Security Council.
He stressed that India’s global diplomatic offensive has exposed Pakistan’s role in fostering terror, especially following TRF’s admission of carrying out the recent Pahalgam attack.
No Third-Party Mediation or Intervention
Amid speculation surrounding India’s recent ceasefire with Pakistan during Operation Sindhoor, Jaishankar firmly dismissed the idea of any third-party involvement. “There were no calls or coordination between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump between April 22 and June 16,” he said. “The ceasefire was entirely India’s decision, driven by our own strategic calculations.”
Warning of Continued Military Response
Jaishankar issued a clear warning to Pakistan: “India will not tolerate cross-border terrorism under any circumstances. If Pakistan dares to launch another attack, Operation Sindhoor will continue with full force.”
