Hyderabad, May 10: Asim Munir on Sunday described last year’s conflict between India and Pakistan as a “battle between two ideologies.”
Munir made the remarks while addressing a ceremony at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi to mark the first anniversary of “Marka e Haq,” the term used by Pakistan for the four day military conflict with India.
During his speech, the Pakistan Army chief claimed that Pakistan’s military strategy proved “superior” during the confrontation. However, he did not provide evidence to support several of his claims.
The tensions began after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people, mostly tourists, lost their lives.
In response, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 last year. Indian forces carried out airstrikes on nine terror infrastructure sites located in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir.
According to Indian authorities, the operation eliminated at least 100 terrorists linked to cross border terror groups.
Soon after the strikes, tensions escalated rapidly. Pakistan launched retaliatory attacks, although Indian defence forces reportedly intercepted most of them.
Military hostilities finally ended on May 10, 2025, after hotline level talks between senior army officials of both countries resulted in an understanding to halt military action.
Pakistan claims ceasefire request came through US
Addressing the gathering, Munir alleged that India violated Pakistan’s sovereignty during the conflict period between May 6 and May 10 last year.
He also claimed that Pakistan targeted 26 locations during the confrontation. However, he did not present any supporting proof.
Munir further claimed that India sought a ceasefire through the United States and said Pakistan agreed “in the interest of peace.”
India, however, has consistently maintained that the understanding to stop military action was reached directly between the two countries through military communication channels.
The Pakistan Army chief also spoke about future warfare and said upcoming conflicts would involve multiple domains, including advanced technology, weapons systems and specialised military training.
He highlighted Pakistan’s military modernisation efforts, including Hangor class submarines, a new Rocket Force and fighter aircraft acquisitions.
Meanwhile, India reiterated that its military response focused on combating cross border terrorism and protecting national security interests. On the first anniversary of Operation Sindoor, Indian officials reaffirmed the country’s commitment to strengthening the global fight against terrorism.
