New Delhi, July 6: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Bharatiya Jana Sangh founder Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary. He said Mookerjee’s sacrifice for India’s unity and his dedication to public service would continue to inspire future generations.
Modi described Mookerjee’s life as a timeless example of courage and unwavering commitment to the nation. In a blog post, the Prime Minister said that despite being born into a prosperous family, Mookerjee devoted his life to national service.
The Prime Minister said Mookerjee stood firmly against colonial rule, partition politics and several social challenges during his public life. He added that national unity remained the guiding principle of Mookerjee’s political journey.
Modi recalled Mookerjee’s role in ensuring that West Bengal remained part of India during Partition. He also noted that Mookerjee died in detention while campaigning for the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with India.
The Prime Minister said the Union government’s decision to abrogate Articles 370 and 35A in 2019 fulfilled Mookerjee’s long standing vision for national integration.
Modi also highlighted Mookerjee’s academic achievements. He said Mookerjee became the youngest Vice Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and contributed to strengthening research and library development.
He further recalled Mookerjee’s tenure as independent India’s first Industries Minister. According to Modi, he played a key role in establishing major projects, including the Damodar Valley Corporation and the Sindri Fertilizer Factory.
The Prime Minister said Mookerjee’s contributions to nation building and public service continue to inspire citizens across the country.
