PM Modi Receives Grand Cultural Welcome in Trinidad, Celebrated as a Festival of Indo-Caribbean Heritage
Port of Spain/Hyderabad, July 4 (Maxim News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival in Trinidad and Tobago was transformed into a vibrant celebration of Indo-Caribbean culture, as members of the Indian diaspora staged a colorful, traditional welcome at Piarco International Airport on Wednesday.
Dancers in traditional attire, Ramleela performers, and percussionists playing tassa drums lined up to greet the Indian leader. Prime Minister Modi, visibly moved by the warm reception, strolled down the red carpet alongside Trinidad’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who wore a graceful blue sari symbolizing her Indian roots.
Performers from renowned cultural groups such as First Felicity Ramleela and Cultural Group, Shiv Shakti Dance Group, Malick Folk Performers, and Moko Jumbies turned the airport welcome into a spectacular showcase of Indian music, dance, and folklore, reflecting the deep cultural bonds between the two nations.
“Sharing some glimpses from the welcome at Port of Spain. May the friendship between India and Trinidad & Tobago continue to scale new heights,” Modi posted on X, along with images from the ceremony.
As he descended from the aircraft, PM Modi was received by Trinidad’s Foreign and CARICOM Affairs Minister Sean Sobers, before being presented a bouquet by PM Persad-Bissessar. Three children dressed in white welcomed him with flowers and posed for photographs.
Modi then inspected a military Guard of Honour, as tassa drums echoed and traditional dancers continued their vibrant display.
High-Level Engagements and National Honour
During his visit, PM Modi is scheduled to meet President Christine Kangaloo and address a joint session of Parliament. In a significant gesture, he will be conferred the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago (ORTT)—the country’s highest national award—in recognition of his global leadership and contributions to international cooperation.
According to the Trinidadian government, the honour acknowledges PM Modi’s “outstanding contribution to the development of Trinidad and Tobago and service to the region and wider international community.”
Deep Cultural Roots
Trinidad and Tobago, a twin-island nation in the Caribbean, is home to a large Indian diaspora. Nearly 40% of its 1.4 million population is of Indian origin, descendants of indentured laborers brought from India in the 19th century. This historical connection continues to be a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship.
As Prime Minister Modi’s Caribbean tour continues, the deep-rooted cultural and diplomatic ties between India and Trinidad & Tobago are expected to grow stronger, paving the way for greater collaboration in trade, education, health, and diaspora engagement.
