Police Crackdown On BRS Leaders Ahead Of Assembly Protest

Hyderabad, Sept. 8: Police launched a statewide crackdown on BRS leaders and activists on Tuesday amid apprehensions of protests near the Telangana Assembly.

Several BRS leaders were placed under house arrest or taken into preventive custody, according to reports. Heavy police deployment was also reported near BRS chief K. Chandrashekhar Rao’s residence at Erravelli.

The action followed rising political tensions after Monday’s confrontation between BRS legislators and police at the Assembly gate.

Five Cases Registered Over Assembly Gate Clash

Police have registered five cases in connection with Monday’s incident. BRS MLCs Thatha Madhu and B. Naveen Kumar Reddy were booked under the SC and ST Prevention of Atrocities Act and other provisions.

The cases relate to alleged remarks against Speaker Gaddam Prasad Kumar, according to the report.

Police also registered cases against several BRS leaders over allegations of assaulting and abusing police personnel. Those named include K. T. Rama Rao, T. Harish Rao, G. Jagadish Reddy, Padi Kaushik Reddy and Gangula Kamalakar.

BRS leaders V. Sunitha Laxma Reddy and P. Sabitha Indra Reddy were also named in the cases.

The police action comes amid continued tension between the ruling Congress and the BRS during the ongoing Assembly session.
