Kolkata, July 29: Police recovered a massive cache of explosives from Nalhati in West Bengal during an overnight operation in Birbhum district. The seizure included 800 kilograms of ammonium nitrate, 12,400 gelatin sticks, 105 detonators and 36 detonating fuse coils, officials said.
The operation began on Tuesday night after police received information about explosives allegedly stored in a house at Lakhnamara village in Nalhati Block, a stone quarry hub in Birbhum district.
Police recovered the explosives from a concealed location in the backyard of the rented house. Bomb squad personnel later reached the spot and examined the seized materials.
Officials cordoned off the area and tightened security to prevent any untoward incident. The explosives were subsequently confiscated for further investigation.
Investigators are examining whether the explosives were intended for use in local stone quarries or if they were stockpiled for any sabotage plan.
Police said the house had been rented out recently. The tenant is currently absconding, while the property owner is being questioned.
Authorities have launched a detailed probe into the source, supply network and intended use of the explosives.
Birbhum District Police said similar operations will continue under its “zero tolerance for crime” policy to curb illegal activities and maintain law and order.
The seizure comes a week after the National Investigation Agency recovered a large quantity of explosives, including ammonium nitrate and detonators, during a raid in the same Nalhati area and arrested one suspect in connection with the case.
