New Delhi, August 4: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday called for deeper cooperation between India and Uzbekistan, highlighting significant opportunities in rare earth minerals, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and information technology during a meeting with Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister Saidov Bakhtiyor Odilovich at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
During the meeting, President Murmu said India and Uzbekistan share deep historical, cultural and civilisational ties dating back to ancient trade routes.
She noted that the shared heritage in architecture, language, cuisine, music and religious traditions has helped strengthen bilateral relations over the years.
The President emphasised that there is immense scope for collaboration in strategic sectors, particularly:
- Rare earth minerals and mining
- Agriculture
- Pharmaceuticals
- Information Technology (IT)
Murmu welcomed the participation of senior leaders in the visiting Uzbek delegation and said the India-Uzbekistan Business Forum, held alongside the visit, reflected the growing confidence of businesses in both countries.
She expressed hope that increased economic engagement would further strengthen trade and investment between the two nations.
The President highlighted the expanding educational partnership between the two countries.
She noted that:
- More than 3,000 Uzbek officials, professionals and students have benefited from India’s Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) training programmes and scholarship schemes.
- Over 16,000 Indian students are currently pursuing higher education in Uzbekistan.
Murmu said these educational exchanges have become an important bridge for promoting stronger people-to-people ties and mutual understanding.
The President and Uzbekistan’s Foreign Minister agreed that the discussions held during the visit would further strengthen friendship, trust and cooperation between the two countries across multiple sectors.
