Qutb Shahi Tombs | Hyderabad, April 17: The Telangana government is considering handing over management of the historic Qutb Shahi Tombs to the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Officials believe the trust’s global experience in monument restoration could improve upkeep of the major tourist site.
Sources said the Tourism Department prepared proposals nearly three months ago. If approved, the department may step back from direct supervision of the heritage complex.
The move comes as authorities face growing operational challenges at the monument. Therefore, the government is exploring outside expertise for long term conservation and visitor management.
Qutb Shahi Tombs | Staff Shortage Hits Heritage Maintenance
The sprawling Qutb Shahi Tombs complex covers around 120 acres and includes seven main royal tombs. However, only six staff members are reportedly handling daily operations.
As a result, officials face difficulties in visitor services, garden care, and structural maintenance. Historians say the site needs stronger investment, better promotion, and regular upkeep.
Moreover, experts argue that the New Tourism Policy 2025 to 2030 should allocate more funds for tourism sites and public outreach. They believe stronger government support could attract more domestic and foreign visitors.
Past Court Notices Draw Attention
The proposed handover has also revived discussion about earlier legal scrutiny involving restoration work at the site. In the past, the High Court took up a matter alleging poor quality conservation under a previous restoration project.
The petition claimed some structures suffered damage during repairs, including the tomb of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah. However, no fresh ruling has been reported in the current proposal stage.
Meanwhile, officials say the final decision will depend on policy review and administrative approvals. If cleared, the partnership could reshape management of one of Hyderabad’s top heritage landmarks.
