Rare Case of Vascular Surgery Showcases Cutting-Edge Innovation at CARE Hospitals

Hyderabad, August 30: CARE Hospitals, Nampally, Hyderabad today performed a ground-breaking vascular surgery on a 57-year-old female patient, Mrs. Subba Lakshmi M. This exceptional case highlights the hospital’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of medical innovation and delivering superior patient care.

Mrs. Subbalakshmi M, who had a complex medical history including diabetes, hypertension, and a previous cerebral vascular accident, presented to CARE Hospitals with acute limb ischemia, a condition characterized by reduced blood flow to the limbs, leading to severe pain and tissue damage. Her medical journey had already included a coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) procedure in 2018, as well as angioplasty and amputation in subsequent years.

Upon examination, it was revealed that Mrs. Subbalakshmi M had developed blackish discoloration in her left toes, and her left anterior tibial artery and posterior tibial artery pulses were absent. Cath lab findings indicated narrowing of the superficial femoral artery (SFA) along with complete obstruction of the tibial arteries.

Dr. Sanjeev Rao, Senior Vascular Surgeon at CARE Hospitals, Nampally, led the team in an intricate procedure that showcased the hospital’s expertise in handling complex cases. The treatment approach involved a multi-faceted approach, including the use of a cutting-edge Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) device that breaks the calcified plaque deposit in blood vessels and arteries.

In a pioneering move, the surgical team employed the Intravascular Lithotripsy (IVL) device to make the blocked arteries more compliant and restore blood flow by breaking the vascular calcifications (calcium deposits). This non-surgical technique not only facilitated improved blood flow but also eliminated the need for stenting, which can be challenging in high-risk patients like Mrs. Subbalakshmi. The procedure was a success, leading to the restoration of healthy blood circulation and relief from the debilitating pain Mrs. Subbalakshmi had been experiencing.

“This case highlights the power of innovative medical technology in addressing complex vascular conditions,” said Dr. Sanjeev Rao. “IVL has emerged as a game-changer for patients who are not ideal candidates for traditional surgical interventions. Its ability to gently modify calcified vessels ensures safer and more effective outcomes, especially in frail or older patients.”

The successful surgery at CARE Hospitals, Nampally, showcases the hospital’s commitment to excellence in patient care and its dedication to embracing cutting-edge technology to address the unique needs of complex cases. “As pioneers in the healthcare landscape, CARE Hospitals, Nampally, continues to set new benchmarks in medical excellence, ensuring patients receive the best possible care and outcomes” added Mr. Syed Kamran Hussain, HCOO – CARE Hospitals, Nampally.
