The case began in 2006 after Srilakshmi took charge as the Industries Secretary.  The CBI had accused Srilakshmi of abuse of power in the Obulapuram mining lease case.  The CBI had argued that the leases were allotted in violation of the rules and permissions were granted illegally.  The High Court agreed with these arguments.

The Court found that Srilakshmi had misused her power and committed irregularities in the allocation of mining leases, as alleged by the CBI.  In this context, the High Court also considered the revision petition filed by Srilakshmi.

Earlier, in 2022, the Telangana High Court had discharged Srilakshmi from the case.  However, the CBI approached the Supreme Court, saying that the verdict was given without considering the arguments of the defendants.  The Supreme Court, therefore, directed the Telangana High Court to re-hear the case.
