Mumbai, June 22: Maharashtra politics witnessed a major development after six Lok Sabha MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT) shifted support to the faction led by Eknath Shinde, marking another significant chapter in the continuing political contest over the Shiv Sena’s leadership and legacy.
The MPs reported to have moved to the Shinde camp are:
- Omprakash Nimbalkar
- Nagesh Patil Ashtikar
- Sanjay Jadhav
- Sanjay Deshmukh
- Bhausaheb Wakchaure
- Sanjay Dina Patil
Their move significantly reduces the parliamentary strength of the faction led by Uddhav Thackeray while strengthening the group led by Eknath Shinde.
According to reports, the rebel MPs communicated with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla seeking recognition as a separate parliamentary grouping.
Political observers note that anti-defection provisions generally involve numerical requirements and procedural scrutiny, meaning any formal recognition process would depend on parliamentary and legal examination.
Some of the MPs indicated that developmental priorities and access to government support influenced their decision. They argued that remaining in the opposition had limited their ability to pursue constituency-level projects and secure resources.
Statements from some leaders also pointed to concerns regarding internal party functioning and communication.
Following the development, Uddhav Thackeray reportedly initiated outreach efforts across Maharashtra to maintain organisational support and reinforce engagement with party workers and voters.
The latest development is expected to influence political equations in Maharashtra ahead of future electoral contests and may further intensify competition between the rival Shiv Sena factions over political identity and public support.
