Hyderabad, May 15: The India Meteorological Department, IMD, on Friday announced that the Southwest Monsoon is likely to reach Kerala on May 26, nearly a week ahead of its normal onset date.
Usually, the Southwest Monsoon arrives in Kerala on June 1 and marks the beginning of the monsoon season in India.
According to IMD officials, there could be a variation of one to four days in the arrival date depending on weather conditions.
Last year, the Southwest Monsoon reached Kerala on May 24. This year too, favourable atmospheric conditions are supporting an early onset.

The weather department said conditions are currently favourable for further advance of the monsoon over the southern Bay of Bengal, the Andaman Sea and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The IMD stated that after entering Kerala, the monsoon system will gradually move towards other parts of the country, including central and northern India.
India’s monsoon season generally continues from June to September and plays a crucial role in agriculture, water resources and power generation.
At the same time, the weather department warned that several parts of western and central India are likely to continue experiencing intense heatwave conditions during the coming week.
The IMD forecast extremely high temperatures across many regions, with dry weather expected to persist in several states.
Meanwhile, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over northeastern states and parts of Tamil Nadu during the next three days.
Weather experts said the early progress of the Southwest Monsoon could provide relief from severe summer heat in southern parts of the country.
The IMD continues to monitor the movement of the monsoon system and is expected to issue regular updates in the coming days.
