New Delhi, July 29: The Supreme Court has closed the criminal case against former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the coal block allocation case, setting aside the summons issued to him by a special court.
A three judge bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohan passed the order, holding that there was no justification for continuing criminal proceedings against the former Prime Minister.

The apex court accepted the closure reports submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which had given a clean chit to Manmohan Singh and the other accused in the case.
The bench observed that, in light of the legal principles governing the acceptance of closure reports, there was no valid reason to reject the CBI’s findings or proceed with a trial.
“Based on the guidelines issued by this court earlier on the acceptance of reports of investigating agencies, there is no compelling reason to reject the closure reports submitted by the CBI and proceed with the trial. Therefore, we allow this appeal and close the case,” the court said.
With the ruling, the Supreme Court also quashed the summons issued earlier by the special court, bringing the proceedings against the former Prime Minister to an end.
