New Delhi, June 16: The Supreme Court has issued notices to the Centre and state governments on a petition seeking clear limits on the use of Aadhaar cards and preventing their misuse beyond identity verification.
The petition, filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar, urged the court to direct authorities to treat Aadhaar only as proof of identity and not as proof of citizenship, residence, locality, or date of birth.
The petitioner argued that despite existing legal clarity, Aadhaar continues to be used in multiple areas beyond its intended purpose.
Aadhaar Misuse Petition Raises Scope Concerns
According to the plea, Aadhaar is allegedly being used for age verification, citizenship claims, school admissions, property transactions and applications for birth certificates.
The petition also questioned the use of Aadhaar details in Form 6 for fresh voter registration and argued that using Aadhaar as proof of date of birth may not align with provisions under the Aadhaar Act.
The Supreme Court sought responses from the Central government, state governments and the Election Commission on the issues raised in the petition.
The petitioner requested the court to direct authorities to frame uniform guidelines that clearly define Aadhaar as an identity document and prevent its use for purposes not legally prescribed.
The matter will be taken up after responses are filed before the court.
