The developments have sparked debate in the state, with political observers comparing some of the rhetoric surrounding immigration enforcement to policies advocated by Donald Trump in the United States.

According to reports, efforts are underway to facilitate the completion of a 27-kilometre border fencing project along sections of the India-Bangladesh border.

Authorities are reportedly examining voter rolls and other official records to identify individuals who may not be eligible for inclusion under existing laws and regulations.

Reports also indicate that a holding facility has been established in Malda district for foreign nationals detained for alleged immigration violations. Officials said verification procedures, including biometric checks, are being conducted before any further action is taken under the law.

The discussion has also centered on the provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which reportedly grants broader enforcement powers to designated authorities in matters related to illegal immigration.

Officials have clarified that protections and exemptions available under applicable citizenship and refugee-related laws will continue to apply to eligible individuals from specified minority communities who entered India before the notified cut-off date.
