Chennai, June 15: The Tamil Nadu government has stepped up surveillance and imposed precautionary measures in border districts following renewed concern over Nipah virus cases in neighbouring Kerala.
Health authorities intensified monitoring in areas bordering Kerala and Karnataka, with special attention on tourist and transit zones including Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts. The move follows Kerala’s containment efforts after a confirmed Nipah infection in Kozhikode district.
Tamil Nadu’s Directorate of Public Health directed deployment of special teams at 13 inter state check posts along the Kerala border. Medical camps have been set up to function round the clock and conduct health screening for travellers, tourists and migrant workers entering the state.
Thermal screening and symptom checks are being carried out to identify fever, severe headache, breathing difficulty, cough and vomiting among incoming passengers. Ambulances and isolation arrangements have also been kept ready for rapid response where required.
District administrations and health officials have instructed government hospitals, primary health centres and private clinics to closely track patients reporting fever or encephalitis related symptoms.
Authorities have also directed medical facilities to monitor travel history and immediately report any suspected cases to state surveillance teams.
Kerala authorities have said surveillance and contact tracing continue around the reported case and that the public health situation remains under control at present, with no fresh confirmed cases reported beyond the identified patient as of the latest update.
Nipah virus is a zoonotic disease that can spread from animals to humans and, in some situations, through close human contact. Public health agencies continue to advise hygiene precautions and early reporting of symptoms.
