Hyderabad: Telangana is reeling under one of the most severe heatwaves in recent years, with at least 22 people reportedly dying due to heat related conditions in a single day on Thursday. Extreme temperatures, coupled with dry winds sweeping from northwestern regions, have pushed several districts into dangerous heatwave conditions and triggered a statewide alert.
According to weather reports, temperatures crossed 46 degrees Celsius in nearly 20 districts across Telangana on Thursday. The highest temperature of 46.5°C was recorded in Mutharam of Peddapalli district and Munagala in Suryapet district. Chunchupalli in Bhadradri Kothagudem district and Kamalapur in Hanamkonda recorded 46.4°C.
Residents said the heat became unbearable from early morning itself. Outdoor workers, farmers, traffic personnel, construction labourers and daily wage earners are among the worst affected.
Heatwave deaths reported from several districts
The combined Warangal region reported the highest number of casualties, with nine deaths linked to the heatwave. In Mahabubabad district, elderly women and farm workers reportedly died after prolonged exposure to the scorching sun. In Hanamkonda and Kazipet, a construction worker and a tractor driver collapsed due to suspected heatstroke.
Deaths were also reported from Mulugu and Bhupalpally districts, where labourers collapsed while returning from work in extreme temperatures.
Apart from the Warangal region, fatalities were reported from Suryapet, Mancherial, Nalgonda, Yadadri Bhongir, Jogulamba Gadwal, Medak, Jagityal, Karimnagar, Ramagundam and Khammam districts.
Doctors warned that continuous exposure to high temperatures and dehydration are increasing the risk of heatstroke, especially among the elderly, children and people working outdoors. Health officials said symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, high fever, weakness and unconsciousness should not be ignored.
The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Telangana for May 23 and May 24. Weather experts, including Telangana weather analyst Balaji, warned that severe heatwave conditions are likely to continue in several districts. Adilabad, Asifabad, Nirmal, Karimnagar, Peddapalli, Hanamkonda, Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Nalgonda, Suryapet and Khammam districts are expected to witness temperatures between 45°C and 47°C.
Hyderabad city may also record temperatures above 43°C. Meanwhile, isolated thunderstorms and light rains are expected in districts including Vikarabad, Rangareddy, Sangareddy, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Gadwal and Mahabubnagar.
The Telangana government has issued a public advisory asking people to avoid stepping outdoors between 11 AM and 4 PM unless absolutely necessary. Officials advised citizens to drink plenty of water, consume ORS packets, buttermilk and fluids regularly, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.
Authorities have also instructed hospitals and primary health centres to remain alert and prepared to handle heatstroke emergencies across the state.
