Hyderabad, June 17 (Maxim News): The Telangana government intensified monsoon preparedness measures as a high level team led by Government Advisor Sudarshan Reddy inspected flood prone areas across the Malkajgiri Municipal Corporation (MMC) limits on Tuesday.
The inspection aimed to assess vulnerable locations, review ongoing mitigation works, and identify additional measures to prevent urban flooding during the upcoming rainy season.
Senior officials, including DGP C.V. Anand, HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Managing Director Ashok Reddy, MMC Commissioner Vinay Krishna Reddy, Malkajgiri Police Commissioner Sumathi, HYDRAA Additional Director Varla Papayya, and officials from municipal, irrigation, police, and disaster management departments participated in the visit.
Flood Mitigation Works Reviewed in Key Areas
The team first inspected Prakash Nagar Metro Station and Chikoti Gardens, areas that witnessed severe waterlogging during previous monsoons.
Officials reviewed the causes of flooding and discussed immediate and long term solutions. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath said the situation had improved considerably after extensive desilting of underground drainage systems undertaken by HYDRAA last year.
He explained that floodwaters originating from Begumpet Airport had earlier inundated surrounding areas. However, the construction of a storage pond with a capacity of 40 lakh litres significantly reduced the impact of runoff water.

Ranganath also observed that maintaining lower water levels in Hussain Sagar could further help in mitigating flooding in nearby localities.
Uppal and LB Nagar Flood Control Measures Examined
The officials later inspected the five lakh litre capacity sump near Uppal Crossroads. Water Board officials informed the team that the facility had played a crucial role in preventing flooding at the busy junction.
They also highlighted that restoration of Uppal Nalla Cheruvu had substantially reduced flood threats in surrounding areas.
At LB Nagar Crossroads, the team inspected stormwater drains leading towards Bairamalguda Lake. Officials proposed the construction of a 900 mm stormwater drain connecting Chandrapuri Colony and Gunti Jangaiah Colony to improve water flow and prevent inundation during heavy rains.
Government Advisor Sudarshan Reddy directed officials to expedite the proposed works and complete them before the peak monsoon season.
Additional Drainage Works Proposed at Vanasthalipuram
The inspection team also visited Vanasthalipuram near KLM Shopping Mall and reviewed drainage connectivity works linked to the National Highway corridor.
Officials examined pipelines installed last year beneath the Vijayawada Highway to facilitate the movement of floodwater from FCI Colony, Prashanth Nagar, Abhyudaya Nagar, and Chintalakunta village towards Mansoorabad Pedda Cheruvu.
They informed the team that a 1.10 metre diameter pipeline installed earlier had reduced flooding considerably. However, an additional 1,000 mm pipeline is required to completely resolve the issue and ensure smooth discharge of rainwater during heavy downpours.
The officials emphasized that continuous monitoring and timely execution of drainage projects would play a key role in protecting residents from flood related disruptions during the monsoon season.
