Heavy Police Presence Amid Protests

On Friday, large contingents of police forces surrounded the three villages, where farmers staged protests against the land survey. These villages had earlier gained national attention for their strong resistance to a similar government move in November 2024, when officials tried to acquire land for a pharma cluster. Back then, angry villagers chased away the district collector and other officials, leading to multiple arrests and month-long jail terms for protesting farmers.

Following the resistance, the pharma cluster project was scrapped, but now the government has introduced a new plan for a multipurpose industrial park, triggering fresh protests.

Farmers Stand Firm: “We Won’t Give Up Our Land”

As officials arrived on Friday to conduct land surveys, hundreds of policemen were deployed in the area to maintain order. However, villagers, including women and elderly residents, defied the heavy police presence, holding placards and raising slogans against the project.

Farmers demanded an immediate halt to the survey, insisting that they did not want industries in their region and wished to continue cultivating their fertile lands. Heated arguments broke out in Roti Banda Thanda, where villagers confronted officials and police.

Past Clashes and Government’s Push for Industrialization

The Vikarabad district administration has conflicted with these villages over industrial projects for some time. In November 2024, when officials attempted to hold a public hearing in Lagarcherla, District Collector Prateek Jain and KADA Special Officer Venkat Reddy were chased away by villagers. The protests drew the attention of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST), and NCST member Jatothu Hussain Nayak later visited the region to interact with tribal farmers.

Originally, the government had planned a pharma village, issuing a notification to acquire 1,350 acres of land. But after strong opposition, the plan was revised, and a fresh notification was issued to acquire lands in Lagarcherla, Polepally, and surrounding villages for the new multipurpose industrial park.

Despite the government’s push, the villagers remain firm in their opposition, determined not to give up their ancestral lands for industrial projects. (Maxim News)
