Fake BG II cotton seeds worth ₹10 lakh seized
During the operation, police and Agriculture Department officials seized two bags containing 70 kg of seed packets branded as “BILLA BG II 999” and three bags carrying 80 kg of loose spurious cotton seeds. The total value of the seized material is around ₹10 lakh.
During questioning, Mallikarjuna Rao allegedly admitted that he was transporting the fake seeds to sell them to cotton farmers by claiming they would give higher yield and better crop output. Police said further inquiry showed that he had earlier been involved in the seeds and pesticides business in Guntur and had teamed up with Shankar to procure and market fake cotton seeds in Telangana.
Police said the accused failed to produce any valid licence, bills, invoices, transport permits, stock registers or authorisation papers for the seeds in his possession. Investigators suspect the network targeted farmers by passing off the seeds as high yield BG II cotton seeds.
Officials warned that use of such spurious seeds could lead to poor germination, crop failure and heavy financial losses for farmers. They said fake seeds can also raise cultivation costs by forcing farmers to spend more on pesticides, fertilisers and re sowing.
Yadadri Bhuvanagiri police said they will continue action against those involved in the manufacture, transport and sale of fake seeds. They also appealed to farmers and the public to share credible information on spurious seeds to help protect the farming community.
The operation was carried out under the supervision of Yadadri Bhuvanagiri Superintendent of Police Akshansh Yadav, Additional SP Ch Lakshminarayana, SDPO P Srinivas Naidu, Yadagirigutta Rural Circle Inspector M Shankar, Thurkapally Sub Inspector Mohd Thakiuddin, Mandal Agriculture Officer K Sri Uma and the staff of Thurkapally police station.
