Srinagar, June 10: Two soldiers were killed after an accidental explosion near the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Wednesday, officials said.
The incident occurred in the Kamalkote area of URI, where the soldiers sustained critical injuries during the blast.
According to official sources, the deceased were identified as Arjun Jadhav and Vikram Balakrishna, both natives of Maharashtra and personnel of the 8 Rashtriya Rifles.
The injured soldiers were rushed to the Army’s Base Hospital in the Badamibagh Cantonment area of Srinagar for treatment. However, despite medical efforts, they succumbed to their injuries.
Officials said the exact cause of the explosion is yet to be determined. Further details are awaited.
The Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir stretches for about 740 kilometres and passes through the districts of Baramulla, Kupwara, and Bandipora in the Kashmir Valley. In the Jammu region, it runs through Poonch, Rajouri, and parts of Jammu district.
LoC Remains Key Security Zone
The Union Territory also shares a 240 kilometre International Border across the districts of Samba, Jammu, and Kathua. While the Indian Army guards the LoC, the Border Security Force (BSF) is responsible for securing the International Border.
Security forces remain deployed along these frontiers to prevent infiltration, smuggling, and cross border drone activity. Authorities have installed advanced anti drone systems to counter attempts to transport arms, ammunition, cash, and narcotics across the border.
Investigations are underway.
