Washington/Hyderabad, June 30, 2026: A fresh anecdote highlighting the personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emerged during a recent public event in the United States.
Speaking at the US–India Strategic Partnership Leadership Summit (USISPF), US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore shared an incident involving President Trump’s attempt to speak with Prime Minister Modi during the UFC 327 event held in Miami earlier this year.
According to Gore, President Trump expressed a desire to call Prime Minister Modi while backstage at the event.
“I told him it was around 6 a.m. in India and perhaps not the best time to make the call. But President Trump said that Prime Minister Modi would already be awake and remarked that he also sleeps very little,” Gore recalled.
However, due to event commitments and Trump’s scheduled appearance on stage, the call was reportedly postponed and arranged for the following day.
Sergio Gore said the episode reflected the closeness and comfort in the relationship between the two leaders and underlined the broader strength of India–US ties.
He remarked that some diplomatic relationships function through formal scheduling, but described the interaction between Trump and Modi as more direct and personal.
Gore also said President Trump often speaks positively about India and recalls his earlier visits to the country.
During his remarks, Gore indicated that discussions related to a proposed India–US trade agreement were nearing completion and suggested that negotiations had entered the final phase.
His comments once again drew attention to the continuing diplomatic and strategic engagement between India and the United States.
