New Delhi/Hyderabad, June 30, 2026: General Dhiraj Seth formally assumed charge as the new Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army on Tuesday, becoming the country’s 31st Army Chief and succeeding General Upendra Dwivedi following his retirement.
The change of command took place through a ceremonial handover at South Block in New Delhi, marking the beginning of a new leadership phase for the Indian Army.
General Dhiraj Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986 after graduating from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. Over a military career spanning nearly four decades, he has served across operational, strategic, capability development and institutional roles.
Before taking over as Army Chief, he served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff.
General Seth has held command responsibilities at multiple levels and has extensive experience in diverse operational environments, including counter-insurgency assignments and leadership of major Army formations. He has also led important operational commands along India’s western front.
He is widely associated with efforts related to force modernisation, long-term capability development and preparation for future warfare requirements.
General Seth takes charge at a time when the Indian Army continues to focus on modernisation, self-reliance and integrated military capability development.
