Hyderabad, May 8: TVK chief Vijay is set to form the government in Tamil Nadu after securing support from key alliance partners. Party sources said Vijay is expected to meet Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar again with letters of support from allied parties.
TVK emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in the 234 member Assembly. However, the party remained short of the majority mark needed to form the government.
The Congress party, which won five seats, already extended support to TVK. As a result, the alliance strength increased to 113. Now, support from VCK, CPI and CPM is expected to take the number beyond the majority mark.
Support For TVK Government
Sources said the CPI and CPM leaderships have decided to back TVK. In addition, two MLAs from VCK are also expected to support Vijay. These parties are likely to submit formal letters of support to the Governor soon.
Vijay had met the Governor on Wednesday and Thursday to stake claim for forming the government. However, the Governor reportedly advised him to return with confirmed numbers before proceeding further.
With the latest developments, TVK now appears confident of crossing the majority mark. Party leaders said discussions with alliance partners were completed successfully.
Meanwhile, political activity intensified in Chennai as preparations began for the possible swearing in ceremony. TVK leaders said the alliance aims to provide a stable government in the state.
The Assembly election results marked a major political shift in Tamil Nadu. TVK broke the long standing dominance of the DMK and AIADMK in state politics. Vijay’s rapid rise from actor to chief ministerial contender has drawn national attention.
Party sources said a final announcement on government formation is expected after the Governor reviews the letters of support.
