Hyderabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Trinamool Congress government over developments related to an event attended by President Droupadi Murmu in the state. The issue concerns the International Santal Conference and the arrangements made during the President’s visit to West Bengal.
The Prime Minister reacted after the venue of the International Santal Conference was changed and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was absent from the event. President Droupadi Murmu had travelled to Siliguri to attend the International Tribal Conference in North Bengal. However, according to reports, no one from the state government officially welcomed her on arrival.
Modi described the situation as serious and criticized the actions of the state government. In a message posted on the social media platform X, he said, “This is a shameful act. This has never happened before. This act is a blow to the morale of everyone who believes in democracy and the empowerment of tribal communities. The sentiments expressed by the President, who belongs to the tribal community, have caused immense sorrow in the hearts of the people of the country.”
Protocol issue during President Murmu’s visit sparks controversy
The Prime Minister also said the Trinamool Congress government had crossed limits in handling the situation. He alleged that the state administration was responsible for what he described as an insult to the President. According to him, the developments around the conference raised concerns about protocol and respect for constitutional positions.
The International Santal Conference was scheduled to take place in West Bengal with President Murmu in attendance. However, the planned venue did not receive permission from the state government due to security reasons. As a result, the venue was changed.
Meanwhile, according to established protocol, the Chief Minister, ministers, and senior officials usually welcome the President during official visits. However, during this visit to Siliguri, no representatives from the state government arrived to officially receive President Murmu.
The President later expressed her feelings regarding the developments. She said that only the concerned authorities knew the reasons behind the situation. However, she clarified that she held no hatred toward the Mamata Banerjee government. She also stated that she considered Mamata Banerjee like a sister.
President Murmu further reminded that she was also a daughter of Bengal. Her remarks attempted to reduce tensions despite the controversy surrounding the event arrangements.
The developments have sparked political reactions and discussions about protocol during high-level constitutional visits. Meanwhile, the exchange of statements between leaders has brought national attention to the incident connected with the International Santal Conference in West Bengal.
