Hyderabad, August 5: Drug resistant infections are increasing the demand for costly last line antibiotics in Hyderabad hospitals, with doctors turning to advanced medicines like Fetroja Cefiderocol for treating severe bacterial infections.
Doctors said patients developing resistance to older antibiotics are leaving hospitals with limited treatment options. As a result, some critical medicines are being imported at extremely high costs.
Fetroja Cefiderocol is used for treating New Delhi metallo beta lactamase (NDM) bacterial strains, which are becoming more common in tertiary care hospitals.
A recent video shared by a clinician highlighted the shortage and high cost of the antibiotic in India. The doctor also stressed the need for responsible antibiotic use and better availability of critical medicines.
According to medical experts, one gram vial of Fetroja Cefiderocol costs around Rs 35,000. Standard critical care treatment may require six grams daily for about 10 days, increasing the total expense to over Rs 20 lakh.
Doctors said the growing use of such expensive medicines is linked to antimicrobial resistance, which allows bacteria to survive against commonly used antibiotics.
Specialists warned that misuse and overuse of antibiotics have contributed to the rise of superbugs. Therefore, they stressed the importance of proper antibiotic practices to prevent further resistance.
